A visualization: Letting go of what no longer serves us

A common theme for all of us is our fears. Clients often say that everyone comes to them for advice, yet when they try to sort things out in their own life, they can’t see the answer. That’s usually fear.

If you feel something is getting in your way – whether it is fear, “yeah-butting” or “what iffing” let me offer a visualization.

Choose a time when you can relax for thirty minutes or so. This isn’t a one-time visualization, but one you will want to revisit anytime you feel that obstacle looming.

Relax deeply and imagine yourself standing somewhere that is very comfortable to you. You feel absolutely safe here. Take a deep breath. Let it out.

Now…imagine your goal on the other side of a brick wall. That goal can be finding a new home, developing the confidence to get the job you want, finding a mate, whatever it is. Even if it’s nebulous and you can’t define it, that’s okay. It can even be a feeling – finding your passion or feeling content.

The brick wall can be tall or short, long or narrow.

Now, imagine reaching out and taking a brick off that wall. Take a look at it because it says something important. One of the things standing in your way is revealed on that brick.
Read it and really feel the message. That’s not your message. It didn’t come from you. It came from someone else. Who gave you that message? Find that person in your mind. Bring the brick to them and thank them. It’s likely their intention was good. Ask them what they were trying to tell you with this message.

Were they trying to keep you safe? Trying to help you have a happy life? Encouraging stability? Thank them for their intentions, take that care and love with you but let them know you no longer need the brick. Hand the brick back to them and say, “This isn’t mine. This belongs to you.”

Even if you feel the intention was not in your best interest, you can give the brick back but keep any good that came from the interaction.

Take a minute to soak in how that feels. That part of the brick wall is gone. Feels good, doesn’t it.

Continue with this as long as you like or as long as it takes. Every brick you move is progress. You’re going to see your goal more clearly, be better able to reach out for it and finally – make it happen.

Release these “bricks” with gratitude. Keep the good stuff and draw strength from it. Let the pieces that are getting in your way go. It was never the intention of the original message.
